The History and Development of Poinciana, FL

When most people think of Florida, they imagine a state with endless beaches, swaying palm trees, and crystal-clear waters. While this is certainly part of what makes Florida so special, the state is also home to a wealth of history and culture that often goes overlooked. One city, in particular, that is ripe with history and culture is Poinciana.

Poinciana is one of the largest, unincorporated, master-planned communities in the United States. It was established in 1972 and has grown to include almost 50,000 acres of land with a population of around 69,309 people, according to the 2020 Census.

The population of Poinciana saw the biggest expansion between 2000 and 2006. Following that, the Florida economic crisis in 2008 created a market with the most affordable housing in Central Florida today, attracting many new families and homeowners to the area.

Today, Poinciana offers its residents a safe environment and a variety of amenities and activities. It is a great place to live in for families, individuals, young professionals, and nearly every other group.

But how did this area come to be, and how has it developed since its beginnings? Read on as we give a short insight into the city’s history.

Poinciana is a city, or better yet, a census-designated place (CDP) in Polk County and Osceola County in Florida. Before it was named Poinciana, this area was originally known as Kissimmee Heights, as it was considered a part of the city of Kissimmee. The town was renamed Poinciana in 1927. It has been speculated that it was named after a French variety of the Royal Poinciana tree (Delonix Regia), which grows in profusion in tropical climates. In the Florida Keys, you can find one of the few remaining stands of this wondrous flowering tree.

We can trace the origins of the area that is today Poinciana back to the 1960s, when around 50,000 acres of swamp area and farmland were bought by a company that later became known as Avatar Holdings, Inc. In 1972, Poinciana was formally established as the largest, unincorporated, master-planned community in the United States.

Since its beginnings to this day, one of the things that makes Poinciana so special is its diversity. You will find people from all walks of life living in Poinciana, including families with children, retirees, and even young professionals. This diversity is one of the things that makes this community so strong.

Poinciana was even listed as #1 on the list of America’s 100 Nicest Places to Live – not once but twice! It doesn’t come as a surprise as the area offers a unique environment where one can enjoy the cultural and entertainment amenities, as well as outdoor activities and wildlife.

While the history and culture of Poinciana may not be as well-known as some of Florida’s other cities, that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth exploring. Poinciana is a great, beautiful, and welcoming community, so don’t hesitate to visit it or consider it as a place to put down roots.
