Jacksonville FL, a Sporty City
It’s easy to see why Jaxons have an affinity for sports. There are many great professional and recreational sports teams in Jacksonville FL, from football and baseball to golf. People go to sporting events because they enjoy competing in the games, cheering on their favorite players, and becoming involved with the community.
So, whether you are looking to cheer on the local teams or be active yourself, you can be sure you will find and enjoy that special sporting experience. Here are some sports you can enjoy in Jacksonville – but get your tickets early because most sell out fast.
Football: Jacksonville Jaguars
Since football is the most popular sport in Jacksonville, it’s no surprise that the city has a major league professional team – the Jacksonville Jaguars of the National Football League (NFL). The Jaguars joined the NFL in 1995 as an expansion team and have since won three division championships.
They play home games at the massive Jacksonville stadium, TIAA Bank Field, formerly known as Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. The same stadium was the host of Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005.
Sometimes, the stadium lights will serve as the base for bungee jumping. Jaxson de Ville, the official Jaguars’ mascot, does such stunts to entertain the crowd before and during the football games.
Jacksonville Jaguars are accompanied by a professional cheerleading squad, the Jacksonville Roar, who perform choreographed routines at every game. The group also organizes charitable events in Jacksonville FL.
Baseball: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp
Jacksonville FL started hosting professional baseball games in the late 19th century, beginning with the Southern League of Colored Base Ballists, the first organized Black baseball league.
Today, the city has a professional baseball team – the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. They currently play in the Triple-A East league, and all home games are played at 121 Financial Ballpark that has a capacity of 11,000.
It is interesting that the team changed its name three times. They were initially called the Jacksonville Suns and then the Jacksonville Expos. Finally, the team changed the name to Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in 2017 after shrimping became very popular in the Jacksonville FL area.
The success of Jacksonville’s baseball team is recognized in International and Southern League Awards that many baseball players were given for their performance.
Golf: The Players Championship
Golf enthusiasts will be happy to know that there are more than 70 golf courses throughout great Jacksonville FL. There is a golf course with 117 holes on Amelia Island, north of Jacksonville. The World Golf Village is a golf resort between Jacksonville and St. Augustine that features the interactive World Golf Hall of Fame.
One of the most popular golf destinations is Ponte Vedra Beach, located 18 miles southeast of downtown Jacksonville. It rose to prominence due to the annual hosting of The Players Championship, the most prestigious non-major golf tournament on the PGA Tour. As always with golf activities, the area is associated with high-income tourists.
As you may have noticed, sport is an important part of Jacksonville culture. The sports mentioned above are just some of the most prominent ones you can enjoy in Jacksonville, but there’s plenty of others to choose from as well.
